Why a photo with no date or context is close to worthless

A photo on its own proves less than most contractors think. Without a date, a location, and context, it's easy to challenge and hard to rely on when it matters.

Contractors often assume that having taken a photo of something means they're covered. In practice, a photo pulled out of a camera roll months later, with no date attached, no clear indication of which job or which part of the building it shows, and no context about what was happening when it was taken, is far weaker evidence than it feels like it should be.

The problem shows up the moment a photo is challenged. If a client or their solicitor asks when exactly a photo was taken, and the honest answer is "sometime around when that work was done, we think," the photo stops being reliable evidence and becomes something closer to an assertion, exactly the kind of unsupported claim it was meant to replace. Metadata can help, but it's not something anyone can point to confidently in a dispute without extracting and explaining it, which most people can't do under pressure.

Location matters just as much as date. A photo of a damp proof course is only useful evidence if it's clear which wall, which elevation, which part of the building it shows. A generic photo of brickwork with no way to place it against the actual structure doesn't answer the question anyone's asking, which is usually about one specific spot.

Context is the third piece, and it's the one most often missing. A photo showing a finished detail is good. A photo showing the same detail with a brief note, what stage this was, why it was taken, what it's meant to demonstrate, is far stronger, because it removes any need for someone to interpret the photo correctly months or years after the fact, possibly without you there to explain it.

This is an argument for how photos are stored, not just that they're taken. A photo kept on the job with the date, time and location it was taken, and tagged with the stage of work, turns into evidence the moment it's taken, rather than something that needs to be pieced together and explained later. That's the whole design behind how photos work in Sitestack.
